If you ever miss your lesson for any reason, see Mr.B to schedule a makeup lesson. I have makeup slots available, and I can also do lessons before school, depending upon the day. After school is not always convenient, as I have Jazz Band rehearsals, however, I will make myself available if possible.

Weekly small group lessons: (50%) Students receive a grade at every lesson, from 0 (missed lesson) to 10. If a student fails to get their playing sheet signed by a parent, Mr.B will indicate this in the weekly grade with a plus (+) symbol. This indicates that Mr.B will raise the grade (by one point) once the playing sheet is signed. This way, no student is penalized for not having mom or dad sign their playing sheet. (i.e., if student earned a 9 for the week, Mr.B will write 8+, and will raise grade up to 9 as soon as the practice sheet is signed for that week...) Students are graded on the following: a) Preparation of prior week's assignment b) Effort (as indicated on their playing sheet) c) Coming Prepared for Lesson with book, instrument, etc. Students missing a lesson due to a legal absence (illness, etc.) are excused from that lesson. Students who simply forget, may make-up their lesson within two weeks of the lesson. Rehearsal Attendance/Etiquette: (25%) Students are expected to have their instrument for band rehearsal. In addition, they are expected to take care of their music and their instrument at the conclusion of rehearsal. No talking or other distractions should take place while the conductor is on the podium. No food or beverages are allowed in the band room during a rehearsal. Every student is expected to be an active participant in the rehearsal. Concert Attendance/Etiquette: (10%) All band members are expected to be in attendance at every band performance. In addition, band members are expected to be a courteous and respectful audience when listening to other groups perform. Playing Quizzes: (10%) Approximately once per marking period, students will need to demonstrate their proficiency on a short playing quiz. These quizzes will include such basics as: Scales, band music, special technical exercises, etc. Portfolio: (5%) Approximately three times per year, students will need to submit a recording (audio or video) of a short performance showing their growth as a musician. Students select the piece. A good example might include: 1) 5 scales from memory, or b) a short piece out of a lesson book, c) a section of a solo. We will record these during lessons on school computers. (Students MAY do them at home if they prefer). Extra Credit: Outside performances, Private lessons, Jazz Band, Orchestra, Solo Festival Help, Chorus, church performances, etc. Mr. Baldwin will post grades online on a weekly basis, using student "code names". Check this posting regularly, to keep yourself "up-to-date" with regards to your grade. If you need a new "code name" at any time, don't hesitate to tell Mr.B. |
